Bury St Edmunds' residential market bucks the national trend as arc's apartments attract international interest

Six months after opening, half of the 62 residential apartments in arc, the mixed-use development in Bury St Edmunds town centre, have now been sold and buyers are being attracted from as far afield as New Zealand and the USA, reports the development's residential sales agents, Savills.

"arc is attracting a huge amount of interest and must be one of the best performing residential developments in the country at present," said Ben Runciman, head of Savills Bury St Edmunds.  "Over the half apartments are now sold, including one just sold to a New Zealander, who spotted the opportunity from the other side of the world via the Savills website.  We are also expecting another apartment to be sold in the near future to an American, who fell in love with both arc and the town when visiting friends in the area".

"Many of the new residents are either 'empty-nesters' downsizing from a larger Suffolk home, while other buyers include mature investors seeking a safer return than the financial markets can currently offer for their pension pots - the apartments are also proving very popular in the rental market.  We're even beginning to see interest from first time buyers as the apartments are ideally priced for them," added Runciman.

arc's range of studio, one and two-bed apartments - priced from £99,000 up to £159,000 - have been built above the shops either side of two new open shopping streets created by the development, which was designed by international award-winning Hopkins Architects.  The apartments benefit from underground parking and secure entrances directly off the new streets.

The development also features a new public square onto which face a Debenhams department store and a multi-purpose public venue.  Other retail attractions include a wide range of up-to-the-minute fashion stores such as H&M, New Look, Next, Vero Moda/Jack & Jones, Hobbs, Crew Clothing, Fat Face and Animal plus other retail attractions such as Waterstone's and HMV.

The 500 seat new public venue is due to open in 2010 and will put on a wide range of cultural events.  The new residents of arc also benefit from the increased vitality of the town centre including, within a few hundred yards walk, a new multiplex cinema, a Waitrose store and a wide range of restaurants, shops and amenities in the historic town centre.
